The Sea of Stillness

The Sea of Stillness

This afternoon I walked along the little path amongst heather, blueberry bushes, tall grasses, sea plants, and wildflowers, to the other shore, and looked upon at the serene sea, and sat down on the soft white sand to meditate. I softened my gaze and relaxed my body, sinking down and feeling open. The waters were calm, with a gentle ripple across the surface, shimmering silver. The skies were cloudy yet soothing. A seagull flew over, there was only the sound of seabirds and a few boats’ motors, still quite far away. A pause to breathe for a while, few thoughts. A flap of great wings, repeating trumpet sounds, a white swan was flying above, near the shore. Then I could just make out the forms of another swan couple, wings regally ruffled up on display, as they glided in tranquility across the midway of the water channel. Cliffs on the other side caught my attention, ancient rose tinged grey granite, with a sandy colour at the base, the water mark, indicating a minimal change of tides. I didn’t see anyone on the land for a while, and only a few boats passing, and felt blessed to relax in the tranquility.

This place feels familiar from coming every year; this, my third time at the summer place on the west coast of Sweden, yet something deeper touches me. I feel the primal natural peace here. There are moments when one feels this is how it was before humans interfered, harmony of sea meeting land, sea birds and other wildlife living together peacefully. I feel this also when visiting wild Scotland, where my grandfather came from. I felt pure gratitude to experience and revel in the sweetness of stillness, before walking back to Gullersvik, the family summer house, to await the return of my loving heart family.
